How to protect your valuables in case of a burglary.

Billions of dollars of stolen property each year is never returned to their rightful owners. Why, you may ask? Law enforcement are unable to match items with their owners due to lack of proper identification. Studies have shown that the most stolen items in break-ins are electronics, like flat screen TVs, computers, cell phones and Blu Ray players. After purchasing these items, and others, we often forget to “mark” them as we would our lunch in the work refrigerator. This simple process could actually save you a headache and a lot of money.

The easiest method for this is to simply write down the serial number of your product. If possible, write it down on the receipt of purchase, and store it with your personal records. Another method of marking your property is an engraving or inscription of an identifiable number, like your driver’s license number and state abbreviation. This is perhaps the best and most effective method for marking your property. If for some reason you were to lose or forget the serial number, your “mark” would be on your belongings, ensuring they are returned.

There are various methods of marking your valuables. For some property, you may elect to use a black light pen with the identification above. For others, you may choose to have the item engraved using a simple engraving pen- some local police provide these pens for free. For items that cannot be marked, a simple picture and description is all you need to verify that it is yours.

Burglaries are something no one would wish for, but the reality is they happen, and happen often. The precautions one can take to ensure the protection of their valuables is much easier than the post-robbery process. Not only does having your valuables marked deter a thief from actually stealing the item, it will help officials return the stolen property.
