Are you worried about your home security? We don't blame you, home is supposed to be a safe, comfortable place but these days you can never be too sure about that. You don't have to be a passive victim though, here are 7 simple tips you can start following today to make your home a safer place.
1. Change The Locks
When was the last time you changed your locks? Unless you bought your home brand new there's a chance that someone out there still has a key. This also applies if you ever lose your keys. Don't simply assume they won't fall into the wrong hands, you never know where they could end up.
2. Install Deadbolts
When properly installed deadbolt locks are easily the best method of securing your doors. Deadbolt locks provide significantly more protection than spring style locks and a good deadbolt will make it very difficult for a burglar to force open your door. Even if you already have deadbolts it may not hurt to upgrade, as some deadbolts provide more protection than others.
3. Protect Your Windows
Burglars often use windows to get into homes because most homeowners don't bother to install any additional protection on them. For a lot of folks simply upgrading the locks will be enough to keep burglars at bay. However, if you live in an area that's particularly vulnerable to crime you may want to consider installing burglar proof glass as well.
4. Keep Your Front Door Well Lit
A lot has been said on the topic of outdoor lighting and how it may actually help burglars, but when used wisely it can be an effective deterrent. Your main entrance is the one place that you should always keep well lit. Smart lighting is even more effective here as it can create the illusion that someone is home and has noticed the break-in happening, which is likely to scare off all but the most hardened criminals.
5. Get To Know Your Neighbors
There's safety in numbers. The better your neighbors know you the more likely they are to be able to spot suspicious behavior. If you have a good relationship with your neighbors you can even ask them to drop in and check on your place whenever you go out of town.
6. Keep Your Blinds Closed
There's no need to advertise what's in your home, as that will just make it more inviting for burglars. The less they know the better and with all your blinds closed they won't be able to know whether you're wide awake and moving around the house or fast asleep, which should deter most from even trying.
7. Install An Alarm System
When it comes to home security nothing can beat a monitored alarm system. Modern home security plans are more affordable than ever and include alarm systems that are watched 24/7 to ensure your home is as safe as humanly possible. Make sure you advertise it as well, as many studies show that the presence of a security system is enough to deter most burglars from attempting a break-in.
